Beating the top-ranked team in the country last week didn’t give Connecticut much momentum to build on.
One game after upsetting Texas to reclaim a spot in the rankings, the Huskies fell to Providence 81-66 on Wednesday night when Jamine Peterson had 23 points and 14 rebounds.
Peterson scored eight of the Friars’ 14 straight points as they completed their comeback from a 10-point, first-half deficit.
“We just took our foot off the gas. We thought that we had the game won already,” said UConn forward Gavin Edwards, who scored 17 points. “Everybody was just resting on their laurels from the Texas game, and as a result, nobody really came out to play, and we got beat.”
The second-half collapse was all-too familiar to Providence (12-8, 4-4 Big East), which led South Florida by 12 with 2:05 left on Saturday night before losing in overtime. But this time the Friars were on the other end, and the crowd at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center celebrated by storming the court even as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

Down by six points to Seton Hall almost midway through the second half, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim called a timeout and reminded his team that they were playing a Big East Conference game, and it was time to get physical.
The message from the boss was heard loud and clear.
Wesley Johnson had 20 points and a career-best 19 rebounds and the Orange came out of that timeout to run off 15 straight points in an 80-73 victory Tuesday night.
Johnson said Boeheim read the team the riot act during the timeout.
“I told them that we had to get tough. We weren’t tough and we hadn’t had a tough game all year, at least not physical like this, you know, Big East tough,” Boeheim said. “It had to become more of a physical game and we weren’t being physical. But after the timeout, we made a few good defensive plays and that got us going.

Andy Rautins made seven 3-pointers and scored 22 points, leading Syracuse past Robert Morris 100-60 on Wednesday night in the 2K Sports Classic.
Syracuse (2-0), which opened its season with a 75-43 victory over Albany on Monday night, will play California in a week at Madison Square Garden in the next round of the tournament that benefits Coaches vs. Cancer.
Rautins, who missed all six shots he attempted and then rolled his left ankle in the season opener, found his range early against the Colonials (0-1). He hit a 3 from the left corner and another from the right wing to help Syracuse take a 10-6 lead in the first 5 minutes. He made three more 3s in the first 3:09 of the second half to give Syracuse a 71-36 advantage.

Knock, knock. There’s an opportunity waiting at the UConn football team’s door. It’s the Cincinnati Bearcats.
The Bearcats, No. 4 in the country, are 8-0 and off to their best start since 1954. The reigning Big East champions are 4-0 in the conference.
UConn, which put a 40-16 hurtin’ on Cincinnati at Rentschler Field last season, has blown four games in the fourth quarter.
But UConn coach Randy Edsall bopped to the podium for his weekly press conference at the Burton Family Football Complex like he knew something special was on tap.
He wasn’t close to being this upbeat on any other Tuesday.

Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich has returned to campus and attended the Eagles’ practice Sunday afternoon in Alumni Stadium.
Herzlich disclosed earlier this year that he is suffering from Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare cancer, and has been undergoing treatment in Philadelphia. Herzlich returned to The Heights this weekend and moved back to his dorm room. He plans to return to the classroom when classes begin on September 8 and will participate in team meetings and some strength and conditioning workouts.

Syracuse is going all in on the Greg Paulus experiment. Orange head coach Doug Marrone officially named the former Duke basketball player as his starting quarterback on Monday night, even though Paulus has not played football in four years and has never played a collegiate snap.
Paulus, a high school football star who played point guard for the Blue Devils for four years, transferred to Syracuse as a graduate student this spring. Despite having just a week of official practice under his belt, Paulus beat out sophomore Ryan Nassib — who was named the No. 1 quarterback in the spring — and senior Cam Dantley, who was last year’s starter. His first college football game will be Sept. 5 against Minnesota in the Carrier Dome.
