Through four games, the numbers aren’t pretty for the Buffalo Bills offense. They’re especially grotesque when it comes to third downs.
Sunday in Miami, the Bills converted just 1 of 11 chances on third down, their worst performance since going 0 of 7 in a 29-6 loss to the New England Patriots on Nov. 14, 2004.
Going back to last season’s loss to Miami in Toronto, the Bills have gone 2 for 21 on third downs in the last two games against the Dolphins. The team ranks 30th in the NFL in third-down conversions, with a success rate of 23.4 percent.
“It’s clear when you only convert on one third down, the odds of you having a very good day are very low,” Bills coach Dick Jauron said. “We’ve got to get a lot better there.”

Star NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens, who has been known to stir up controversy, is apparently trying to turn over a new leaf with his new team in Buffalo.
He’s staying mum on whether he has any concerns about the Bills’ offense and his role on the team.
“I think over the years that’s always gotten me in trouble and created some sort of division in the locker room with guys on the team,” Owens said after practice on Wednesday. “I try to do the right thing now. And even when I try to do the right thing, it’s not the right thing. I’m in a situation where I’m in a no-win situation.”
When asked about having his 185-game reception streak snapped in last weekend’s 27-7 loss to New Orleans, T.O. said, “Guys, all I can say is that I’m working hard, we’re working hard as a team.”

When it’s a close game and the Buffalo Bills win, law enforcement generally has an easier job of maintaining order at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
“People have to pay attention, and they’re happy if the Bills win. It’s a better, happier crowd in general,” said Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew D. Benz, in explaining why 31 people were arrested Sunday inside and outside the stadium.
But it wasn’t a close game and the Bills didn’t win Sunday as the New Orleans Saints scored a decisive 27-7 victory. On top of that, the game started at 4:05 p.m., allowing fans to spend more time in the parking lot partying.
“I think people tailgate a little longer when the game doesn’t start until later,” Benz said. “I’m pretty sure the rest of the home games are at 1 o’clock.”

The Buffalo Bills’ retooled offensive line will go through another shuffle now that starting right tackle Brad Butler will miss the rest of the season because of a right knee injury.
Without revealing the nature of the injury, coach Dick Jauron announced Monday that Butler is out after it was determined he’ll require surgery a day after getting hurt in a 33-20 win over Tampa Bay.
Jauron said it’s likely the team will attempt to sign another offensive lineman to bolster its depth this week as Buffalo (1-1) prepares to host New Orleans (2-0). The Bills worked out several lineman this past month, including veteran tackle Jon Runyan, who remains a free agent after he wasn’t re-signed by Philadelphia after having microfracture surgery on his right knee.

It didn’t take long for injuries to catch up with the Buffalo Bills’ defense, which has three starters nursing various ailments.
Starting middle linebacker Paul Posluszny is expected to miss about six weeks after having surgery to repair a broken bone in his left arm, and both starting defensive ends also were listed on the team’s injury report after practice Wednesday. Chris Kelsay’s status is uncertain after he missed practice with a bruised knee, and Aaron Schobel has a sore back as the Bills prepare to host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Bills coach Dick Jauron said Posluszny’s surgery went well and the team is hoping he’ll return before Week 8.
Posluszny was hurt during the first half of Buffalo’s season-opening 25-24 loss at New England on Monday. Though it’s unclear when he was injured, Posluszny had his arm wrapped and continued playing with it before leaving the game during the second quarter.

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Terrell Owens took one step closer in recovering from a sprained toe after working out and catching passes in individuals drills during practice Thursday. Bills coach Dick Jauron was encouraged by Owens’ progress and said it’s “possible” that the wide receiver will be cleared to start fully practicing next week.
“He looked good to me,” Jauron said, according to the Bills’ Web site. “We’ll have to see how he tolerates it. As we’ve said through the whole process, we move forward and see how he feels and how he does. And he was really pushing to get on the field.
“Watching him, it looked like he moved well. That was a good sign. Now we’ll just see how he feels.”
It was the third straight day that Owens worked out and marked the most time he had practiced since jamming his foot during the Aug. 9 Hall of Fame Game against the Tennessee Titans.

Bills defensive end Aaron Schobel will miss at least a week with an injured left elbow.
The team’s top pass rusher did not practice Monday in Buffalo’s first session since a 31-21 loss at Green Bay on Saturday. Without divulging the nature of the injury, coach Dick Jauron said it’s not considered a “long, long-term” problem, but could keep Schobel out for a week or so.

Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch had his appeal of a three-game suspension levied back in April upheld by the NFL on Monday. Commissioner Roger Goodell, who confirmed the suspension being upheld through a league spokesperson, dealt Lynch the ban without pay for violating the league’s personal conduct policy stemming from a weapons charge on February 11.
Lynch was arrested in California on weapons charges and in March pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of carrying a gun in his vehicle. Two other charges were dropped and Lynch was sentenced to three years’ probation along with 80 hours of community service. It was the second incident involving Lynch and the law in less than a year, as he was behind the wheel of a vehicle that struck a woman in downtown Buffalo last May 31 in a hit-and-run case. The suspension lasts from September 5-28 and will cover the first three games of Buffalo’s 2009 regular season — including at New England, the home opener versus Tampa Bay and a home date with New Orleans.

The Buffalo Bills have signed free agent Shaine Smith to bolster their injury-depleted group of receivers in training camp.
Listed at 6 feet 2 and 189 pounds, Smith has yet to play in the NFL, but spent part of the 2007 season on the New York Jets’ practice squad. He was originally signed by St. Louis that year as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Hofstra. The Bills are down four receivers since opening camp in suburban Rochester on Saturday.
