For most teams, starting pitching is the top item on the shopping list every winter. The Red Sox hope to be stocked for years to come.
“You can’t have an elite organization without starting pitching,” general manager Theo Epstein said after signing Josh Beckett to a four-year, $68 million contract extension Monday. “And for us, there’s the added expectation of having starting pitchers who can succeed in the AL East. It’s hard to acquire. It’s hard to draft and develop.”
Now that Beckett, who turns 30 on May 15, is signed through 2014, the Red Sox have signed or control their top four starting pitchers, including John Lackey, Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz, through 2014.
“I guess I look at things differently that most people,” said Beckett, who made the deal possible by not insisting on a fifth year. “A lot of people look at what they lost, or what they didn’t get. I’m looking at what I gained here — four more years of stability, four more years with an organization that you know is going to put a competitive team on the field. That can’t be underestimated. A season gets long when you’re losing 90 games.”

One by dripping one, the playoff-bound Red Sox emerged from their clubhouse early this morning.
Standing in slippers, wearing “2009 AL Wild Card Champions’’ hats, grinning like rock stars, reeking of cigar smoke and dripping a trail of beer and bubbly onto the concrete concourse outside their sanctum, Mike Lowell, Dustin Pedroia, Jason Bay and Tim Wakefield shared their thoughts on going back to the playoffs.
“We play from the first day of the season, this is our goal,’’ said Lowell. “We’d rather do it on the field in front of the fans but we don’t care how it comes. Hopefully this is just step one.’’

The Red Sox could be without slugger Jason Bay for at least the start of their four-game showdown against the Yankees, which opens Thursday night in the Bronx.
Bay exited Wednesday’s 6-4 loss to the Rays in the eighth inning, when he aggravated his right hamstring running out a grounder to short.
“I re-aggravated the tweak running down to first in the eighth inning there,” said Bay. “It doesn’t feel real bad but it’s definitely going to be a couple of days.”

Could home be where the hits are? The Red Sox, after an anemic road trip in which the offense went completely dry, can only hope so.
After a much-needed day off on Thursday, the Sox will be back at it on Friday night against the Orioles, when Adam LaRoche, acquired from the Pirates on Wednesday, makes his debut for Boston. The Red Sox will welcome the high-voltage atmosphere of Fenway after going 1-5 on the road. The team comes home in the throes of a season-high five-game losing streak. Boston is 31-14 at Fenway, owners of the best home record in the American League.

Count Astros shortstop Miguel Tejada and Mets pitcher Johan Santana as two of a large number of players who are happy to see Red Sox DH David Ortiz begin to recover his hitting stroke.
“To see him struggle hurt me personally,” said Tejada, who said it didn’t feel like an All-Star Game without Ortiz around. “I’m so happy to see that he’s back to what he used to be.” Ortiz, who had been named to the All-Star Game the last five seasons before this one, is hitting .222 with 12 homers and 47 RBI at the break. But he’s shown signs of breaking out of his season-long slump of late (.320, 7 HR, 18 RBI in June).

All-Star Josh Beckett ended his first half with an absolute gem, going all the way on Sunday to lead the Red Sox to a series victory over the Royals.
The Boston ace hurled his second shutout of the season, leading the American League East front-runners to a 6-0 win over Kansas City at Fenway Park. It was the 11th win of the season — and career victory No. 100 — for Beckett, who allowed just three hits while striking out seven.

In what has become a recent tradition, one that serves as a sign of their success and popularity, the Red Sox will send a sizable contingent to the All-Star Game, with six players named to the American League roster.
Second baseman Dustin Pedroia and left fielder Jason Bay were both voted in as starters by the fans, and ace Josh Beckett and closer Jonathan Papelbon were voted in by the players. First baseman Kevin Youkilis was another selection by Maddon.

The Red Sox placed third baseman Mike Lowell on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday, hoping to give his troublesome right hip some more time to heal.
Lowell underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in the hip during the offseason, and he had 15 CCs of fluid removed on Monday. He also received an injection of Synvisc, a lubricant that helps alleviate pain in joints. The 35-year-old Lowell started just two of the team’s past nine games and returned to Boston for treatment on the hip following Sunday’s game in Atlanta. He was hitting .282 with 10 homers and 41 RBIs in 68 games when placed on the DL.
