Bills defense must make big plays
Posted by GameSetMatch on July 22nd, 2009
The Buffalo Bills’ defense made significant improvements last season. It allowed fewer yards and points, had more success on third down and was stingier in the red zone than the previous year. It was 14th in yards allowed, up from 31st in 2007.
But for all of the Bills’ defensive strengths, there was one glaring weakness: an absence of big plays. The Bills’ 24 sacks tied for the fourth fewest in the NFL and were the club’s lowest total since 1979. They forced just 22 turnovers (tied for 20th in the league), including a franchise record-tying low 10 interceptions. Their turnover ratio of minus-8 was sixth-worst in the league.
